High winds causing problems across the area

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The high winds we're experiencing across Eastern Iowa today are already causing problems across the area.

The Black Hawk County Landfill started inspecting loads at 7:30 Tuesday morning and will turn away any loads that contain "blowable materials" and would pose a risk to customers.  The Iowa Department of Natural Resources prohibits dust and any waste materials from blowing off site.

In Linn County, the Cedar Rapids/Linn County Solid Waste Agency Landfill at 1954 County Home Road in Marion will close at Noon on Tuesday due to the high winds.  The recycling center and Pollution Prevention Center will be open until 4:30 p.m.

In Cedar Rapids, the College Community School District lost power on their campus for about 20 minutes Tuesday morning after high winds caused conductors to slap together.  According to Steve Doser, spokesperson for the district, Alliant Energy told them to expect other temporary outages throughout the day due to the winds.  Doser adds that they will keep all students inside the buildings all day to avoid any injuries to students.

Pam Hinman at the Eastern Iowa Airport says they have been experiencing some cancellations and delays, mainly caused by high winds at other hubs.  Hinman says that if you are expecting someone to arrive or have a flight leaving you should check with the airline before heading out to the airport.  You can find arrival and departure information at their website, http://www.eiairport.org/.

The Waterloo Regional Airport has canceled the 1:11 pm flight this afternoon, but says they have a later flight that they will attempt to get out.  Please call ahead to your airline for the latest information.
