CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids man is facing numerous charges after police say he left the scene of an accident and left his nephew and two nieces in the median of I-380.

Police say Jeffery Earl Benton, 41, was southbound on I-380 on Sunday evening near J Avenue when his seven-year old nephew and 11-year old niece were standing up in the backseat of the vehicle with their heads outside the sunroof.  A second 11-year old niece was buckled in the front seat.

According to police, one of the kids was getting back in the car when they fell into Benton and the steering wheel.  Benton lost control of the car and the car entered the median and rolled over.

Police say Benton helped the three kids out of the car but then ran from the scene.  He was arrested in the area of Sierra Drive and J Avenue NE.

Benton is charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident, Failure to Maintain Control, two counts of Child Restraint Devices, No Proof of Insurance, three counts of Child Endangerment, Operating While Intoxicated or Drugged and No Drivers License.
