Fire destroys Iowa City garage

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The Iowa City Fire Department says residents of a home that caught on fire barely escaped on Sunday because they were trying to rescue their pets.

Crews were called to the home in the 2700 block of Ferndale Drive at around 4:00 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

When they arrived, firefighters found that fire had destroyed the garage and its contents and the fire was starting to spread into the attic of the attached home.

The fire was brought under control quickly but there was smoke damage throughout the entire house.

Two cats in the house survived, but neighbors said they had trouble getting the residents to leave the house because they couldn't find their pets and barely made it out before they were overcome by smoke.

The Red Cross provided shelter for the residents.
