Candy and costumes for kids in Dubuque

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Kids in Dubuque got to break out the Halloween costumes early at the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium's annual trick-or-treat event.

Area businesses sponsored and decorated candy stations in and outside the museum and aquarium.

Kids painted pumpkins, listened to stories, stuffed scarecrows and more.

Volunteer Sharon Lively said the River Museum and Aquarium almost ran into a scary situation.

"We had about 25,000 pieces of candy, and we are starting to run short already, so we just made an emergency candy run so we can continue to hand out candy until we're done," she said.

The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium has the last of another event - it's Spooktacular Saturdays - next week.

With regular admission, kids can collect treats, go through the outdoor maze, paint pumpkins and more. There is also special extended hours on that Saturday, from 5-8 p.m.
