WATERLOO (KWWL)-- If you've ever felt like the room was spinning, you know what vertigo feels like.
The condition causes episodes of dizziness that can be really debilitating.
In Health Plus, a therapy being done in eastern Iowa that can help:
Vern Laures has been selling cars since the '60s, but a bout with vertigo made more than wheels spin for the New Hampton man.
"Well it happened real quick about a year ago. I got up out of bed one morning quite quick like you do a lot of times, heading for my shower and I stood up and, oh man, the room was going 100 miles an hour," he said.
Fortunately, the 71-year-old says he found relief from a unique therapy at Covenant's Kimball Ridge Center in Waterloo.
"9 out of 10 times it'll require just a simple maneuver where I'm taking the patient back, having them go through certain positions and then waiting a day or 2 and reaccess with the same maneuver," said his therapist, Christa Boileau.
Vestibular Rehabilitation Therapy, as it's called, is an exercise-based program designed to correct inner ear issues that can result in vertigo.
"And then the maneuver is simply moving those particles back to where they need to be so the body can reabsorb them," she said.
Vern is convinced it works.
"She put me into it. They gotta do that to get you out of it," he said.
And now he's comfortably back behind the wheel of a car he'd be happy to sell you!
