DNR addresses Shell Rock River dam concern

ROCKFORD (KWWL)-- The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is recommending a hole be punched in the dam on the Shell Rock River near Rockford.

The Charles City press is reporting that a water specialist with the DNR believes the move would relieve the pressure on the leaking dam until it can be repaired or removed.

The Floyd County Conservation Director says the 138-year-old dam was listed in poor condition and in need of extensive repairs after a 2003 inspection. It was damaged more in August when the river began to undercut the dam.
