McCaffery looks to turn Hawkeye basketball around

Posted:

The Fran McCaffery era is underway here in Iowa City, and the Hawks are hoping for progress in 2010.

It's time to wipe the slate clean in Iowa City...After three straight losing seasons...The Hawks are ready to move forward.

Cully Payne Hawkeye point guard said ''It was hard, it was frustrating losing, but one thing we took away from it is we're going up, so we're excited about that.''

Jarryd Cole, Hawkeye forward said ''Our guys here want to be here and want to do things and I think that's the basis for everything successful.''

It all starts with 180 degree shift in philosophy...Under  McCaffery, make or miss...The Hawks are getting the ball and going.

Fran McCaffery said ''We do want to make sure we establish an attack mentality. So I think what we need to make sure we get figured out over these next couple weeks is to make sure we're playing faster and make sure we're attacking the rim, but at the same time, we're under control, making good decisions.''

Eric May, Hawk forward said, ''Once I heard about coach's system last year when we hired him, I couldn't wait for it to begin and that's the style I'm used to playing  in high school and AAU.''

And playing up-tempo means developing depth....theHhawks will look to several newcomers to make an immediate impact.

Matt Gatens, Hawkeye guard said ''I think these new guys know that as well. We have some new fresh faces, some freshman and also a ju-co that are all ready to go and I think they all fit the system well.''

Only time will tell if a new style will put Iowa basketball back on the map...One thing's for sure...There's a new feeling surrounding Hawkeye basketball.

Payne added, ''How do we progress from whatever today is to march. That's one thing we're going to look back on."
