Lamar Sayles: Athlete of the Week

While quiet and somewhat humble from Saturday through Thursday-- when he's under the Friday night lights-- number 20 in green-- becomes one mean machine--

Waterloo Columbus head coach Aundra Meeks, "He takes a through contact, run through contact, run through contact."

Lamar Sayles is one more in a long line of great Columbus running backs-- the senior's gone for 12-hundred yards and 10 touchdowns in the first 7 games-- a lot of which he and coach Aundra Meeks attribute to a special bond for the guys plowing the way--

Meeks: "You know after practice, he's running sprints with them, doing whatever extra activities that they have after practice, he's with them."

Lamar: "Yeah, I love my linemen. They open huge holes for me, and I love 'em."

Sayles is part of a recharged Columbus offense led by senior Jay Schmitt at qurterback. They've helped lead this team to a surprising 5-0 district record-- after all this team won just 2 games total a season ago-- and this year dropped both of their non-conference contests--

Lamar: "We just fought through it, we knew we could do it. We stayed confident. We fought through it."

Meeks: "We all had to look ourselves in the mirror, the coaching staff and say what we could do better, and that kind of was the trigger."

And Sayles has played a huge role in the resurgence-- which is no surprise as the senior back has one last shot to go out on top.

Meeks: "You know you put a lot into your senior year. You wait for that time. It's the target time for most athletes, that senior year, and he's definitely put some time and effort into it."
