UPDATE: Two girls rescued in early morning house fire

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Fire crews responded to a house fire just after midnight on the 500 block of Courtland Street.

When crews arrived a father, mother, and two children were standing on the lawn.

"The father was out front.  The father and mother and two children were already out, but the father said there were two young girls upstairs in the bedroom," said Waterloo Battalion Chief Mike Junk.

The fire department fought to get inside the home to save the girls as flames took over the entrance.

"We couldn't enter the house through the front so we had to ladder the back and send a crew up into the bedroom," added Junk. "They ran into quite a bit of heat and extensive smoke.  It took a little while to find them, but we got them both out."

When firefighters found Trinity Engle and Tellshyiah Engle, they were unconscious.  They were then transported to the hospital.

The Waterloo Fire Chief says the fire started outside the house and then blew into the house.
