Crews battle a number of field fires

WAVERLY (KWWL)-- ''Everything's dry as paper''--- that's one comment from a firefighter as crews battled a number of brush and field fires Saturday. Meteorologists say it's been two weeks now since most of Eastern Iowa has seen a drop of rain.

The dry fields made things worse as crews battled a field fire in Bremer County Saturday afternoon.  Crews say it spread rapidly, burning 100 plus acres in the field outside of Waverly.

Firefighters from three communities spent around three hours at the field on 230th Street.

A combine in the field was also involved, but crews aren't releasing an official cause.  No injuries were reported.

Another fired which started by a combine kept crews in Dysart busy Sunday. Fire officials say the blaze started in a bean field on 150th Street north of Dysart. The combine is completely destroyed, but not much of the field was damaged.
