Linn-Mar claws their way to an overtime victory over CR Washington

MARION (KWWL) -- The Warriors came to Armstrong looking to shake the memory of last week's poor performance against Iowa City High, while Linn-Mar was looking to protect their lair on homecoming.

The Warriors struck first when Alex Carr gets the handoff from AJ Puk and scores the touchdown to make it 7-0 Washington after the extra point.

Then the Warrior defense forces the Lions into a 3 and out and on the punt, Brandon Besong takes it, finds a lane and sprints 75 yards to the end zone.  It's 14-0 Warriors after the extra point.

On Washington's next possession, AJ Puk caps off a drive by calling his own number and turns the corner to the end zone, 21-0 Warriors over the Lions.

Linn-Mar finally gets on the board when Mark Atwater finds Josh Montague with the nice pass, 21-7 Warriors still lead.

The Lions get their second score of the game when Atwater takes the snap on the 1 yard line and punches it in.  It's 21-13 Warriors after the Lions miss the extra point.

Michael Zimmerman would tack on a field goal with just over four minutes to go in the half to make it 21-16, Warriors still with the lead.

As time is running down in the first half, Linn-Mar has the ball again and Atwater connects with Mason Krusie on a bomb, the two point conversion would be no good and Linn-Mar goes into the locker room with a 22-21 halftime lead.

Each time would score two more touchdowns in the second half, but Linn-Mar would miss their final extra point attempt and regulation ends with a 35-35 tie.

Linn-Mar won the toss and got the ball first.  Jer Garman finds his way into the end zone and the Lions take a 42-35 lead after the extra point.

The Warriors get their shot.  After a penalty on Linn-Mar, Washington has the ball on the 5 yard line, Alex Carr gets the call, but as he makes his way to the end zone, the ball gets stripped from his hands and Linn-Mar's Brandon Allen pounces on it to seal the victory for the Lions, 42-35.

Linn-Mar moves to 7-0 and travels to Iowa City High next week for a battle of the unbeaten's.

Cedar Rapids Washington drops to 5-2 and host Iowa City West at Kingston Stadium in week 8.

The Linn-Mar sophomore team also defeated the Warriors sophomore team in overtime on Friday, 20-19.
