SOLON (KWWL) -- The Solon Spartans showed the rest of the state they'll be one of the top teams to contend with, even in Class 3A.
The Spartans, who moved up from class 2A this season, controlled the game against previously unbeaten and top-ranked Williamsburg, winning 22-7.
Derrick Loveless got the Spartans on the board first, scoring on a three yard sweep in the first quarter to put Solon up 6-0. Loveless would leave the game and not return after suffering an ankle injury later on.
In the second half, Travis Brimeyer scored on a six yard run up the middle, giving the Spartans a 12-0 lead.
Williamsburg would pull within five, after quarterback Kelly O'Rourke scrambled for a nine yard touchdown. But with the Spartans clinging to a 15-7 lead late in the fourth quarter, O'Rourke was picked off by Solon's Colin Stebral, who returned it the distance.
The Spartans held a powerful Williamsburg team under 100 yards of total offense.
