Iowa City businessman challenges healthcare mandate

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Many across the country are filing lawsuits challenging the federal mandate requiring the purchase of health insurance in 2014, including an Iowa City businessman.

Matt Sissel of Iowa City celebrated the opening of his business Friday afternoon, putting some of his art work out on the market for the first time at The Art of Matt Sissel.

Sissel is currently uninsured and says a federal mandate makes it more difficult to invest in the things he needs to invest in to run a successful business.

That's why Sissel says he filed a lawsuit last July against the mandate portion of the recently enacted healthcare law.

"I really don't appreciate being constricted into this new healthcare plan and if I don't do something, then who is?" Sissel said.

Supporters of the law say healthy people must be required to buy coverage to offset rising costs insurance companies are facing.

Sissel hopes to hear more on his pending lawsuit in the coming months.
