Race for State Treasurer

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Democrat Michael Fitzgerald is seeking his eighth term as Treasurer of Iowa.  He's the nation's longest-serving state treasurer.

Republican challenger Dave Jamison is from Ames.  He's been the Story County Treasurer since 1995.  Each man says he's right for the job.

"Protecting the taxpayer's dollars. We've done it, never lost money, and it shows in the state's triple a credit rating. It shows in the state has a balanced budget with reserves and we're taking care of the taxpayer money, earning them interest. So, it helps lower their taxes and that's what we'll continue to do," Michael Fitzgerald said.

"What I've done in Story County. I've increased transparency, accountability, and access. And I've kept the size of the office the same over 16 years by embracing technology and being innovative in how we present services to the public," Dave Jamison said.

Jamison says Fitzgerald failed to protect Iowa's largest public pension fund. The IPERS fund was among dozens of private and public investments involved in an alleged fraud by two New York managers in 2009.

Jamison says he'd retain a third-party to conduct an independent audit of anyone who wants to handle public funds.

Fitzgerald says the case involved fraud by investment managers, not mismanagement by Iowa officials.

The full interview with Jamison is available on the Decision 2010 Research the Candidates section of KWWL.com.
