USDA lowers corn yield estimate

DES MOINES (AP) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture has lowered its estimate of Iowa's corn yield from 179 bushels per acre last month to 169 bushel.

The USDA made the estimate in a report released Friday morning.

If its yield estimate is accurate, it would mean a 7 percent drop from the 2009 harvest when Iowa farmers averaged 182 bushels per acre.

The smaller crop has been blamed on record rainfall in July, followed by a stint of cool weather.

The Des Moines Register reports that analysts expect the estimate to cause a sharp increase in corn prices.
