Chinese dissident awarded Nobel Peace Prize

BEIJING (KWWL)--China's most prominent dissident has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Liu Xiaobo has been a thorn in the Chinese government's side since 1989 when he joined student protesters on a hunger strike days before the army crushed the Tiananmen Square Pro-Decocracy movement.

The 54-year-old was sentenced to 11 years in jail last year for campaigning for political freedoms. Liu has been among the most vocal critics of China's one-party rule.

The Nobel Committee said they awarded Liu the Peace Prize for his, quote "long and nonviolent struggle for fundamental human rights."
