Dubuque Police add "submit a tip" tool to website

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Got a tip about crime? The Dubuque Police Department has a new way for you to share information, that could help them during investigations. They're embracing technology, while keeping you safe.

We've all heard of a neighborhood watch but the Dubuque Police Department has launched a new tool that gives that phrase new meaning.

"The vast majority of people communicate electronically these days especially when it comes to informing us of tips," Lt. Scott Baxter said.

It's called "Submit a Tip" and it allows you to electronically provide information to police. Specifically regarding ongoing investigations, criminal activity and other information that doesn't require immediate response.

"Hopefully it's more convenient. We realize that we need the publics assistance to do our job effectively," Baxter said.

But this tool isn't designed to replace 9-1-1.

"Obviously if it is an emergency we want you to call 9-1-1. If the criminal or suspicious activity is going, active, we want you to call. If it's something that's cold or something we can follow up on. It's not going to be monitored 24/7," Baxter said.

Users have the options to remain anonymous. Initially, this new feature will not usually be monitored after 5:00 PM on weekdays or on the weekends.
