Possible food stamp changes

NEW YORK (KWWL) -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Governor David Paterson want to see sugar-sweetened drinks removed from the list of things which can be bought using the nation's food stamp program.

Bloomberg and Paterson will ask the federal government to end the use of food stamps for sugary drinks. They say it is an effort to fight obesity.

During fiscal year 2009, New Yorkers spent up to $135 million on sugary drinks including soda and juices with added sugar.

New York officials say the ban would start out as temporary, lasting two years to allow officials to study its effects.
