Vandals hit Cresco neighborhood

CRESCO (KWWL) -- Neighbors say vandals went too far when they ransacked an eastern Iowa neighborhood. Cresco police say a group went through a northeast subdivision in town early Monday morning breaking into homes, spray painting vehicles, and causing a variety of damage.

Police started receiving calls around 2:30 Monday morning from the neighborhood on 8th Street East. Just a day later, most of the vandalism has been cleaned up but the evidence is still there.

Assistant Police Chief David Winkie says they are in the early stages of their investigation.

"As people started waking up they were discovering more and more and turned out to be about 27 calls for the city that we took of vandalism, small break-ins to garages, and small thefts that occurred but more of it was just vandalism that occurred," Winkie said.

Neighbors, who asked not to go on camera, say it was most likely a group of teenagers who went too far with a prank.

Winkie says Cresco neighborhoods have faced vandalism before, but not on this scale. He says people should do their part to avoid being a victim.

"Just a reminder to the people out there to be vigilant and keeping their items locked up and their doors locked and they can prevent some of this stuff from occurring," Winkie said.

If you live in the area and have any information that would help the vandalism investigation, you should call the Cresco Police Department at 563-547-2424.
