Washington D.C. highlights importance of community college

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- The first ever summit on community colleges will be held in Washington D.C. Tuesday.

President Obama has appointed Dr. Jill Biden, the Vice President's wife, to chair the event and highlight the critical role community colleges play in developing America's workforce.

"We want to make it easier to join students looking for jobs with businesses looking to hire. We want to help community colleges and employers create programs that match curricula in the classroom with the needs of the boardroom," said President Obama.

Hawkeye Community College in Waterloo applauds the presidents efforts and hopes this summit raises awareness of the importance of community colleges.

"I think this is an opportunity for the attendees and the nation to understand the importance of community colleges.  We educate nearly 50% of the undergraduates in this country," said Interim President Dr. Linda Allen.
