Violence against ER nurses high

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A new study finds rates of violence against emergency room nurses are high, and remain steady.

According to the emergency nurses association, between eight and 13 percent of ER nurses are victims of physical violence every week.

Even more are verbally abused, mostly by patients and their relatives.

In almost half of the cases where a nurse was injured, there was no legal action taken against the perpetrator.

The association says hospitals with violence guidelines had fewer cases of physical or verbal violence

They want these standards to become mandatory in ERs across the country.
