VeraSun Energy Bankruptcy Payments

DES MOINES (KWWL)-- Attorney General Tom Miller now recommends that anyone being asked to repay VeraSun Energy consult with their attorney before sending money or even letters regarding the company's bankruptcy.

Two weeks ago, farmers in Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska received letters from the ethanol producer, saying they had until Thursday to return 80% of what VeraSun paid them for corn.

Initially, Miller had recommended farmers act quickly in response to those letters. Now the fuel manufacturer has withdrawn court papers demanding that repayment.

Verasun has not responded to the Attorney General's requests for confirmation.

But one attorney, representing about 70 farmers, says he got a call from a New York law firm saying the trustee will not pursue individual farmers.
