Theft of used restaurant grease going up

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Across the country, some slippery thieves are getting away with their just oils.

Thefts of used restaurant grease have slid up, especially in urban areas where it can be sold to be converted to bio fuels.

The National Renderers Association says there aren't hard numbers, but it's investigating to see how widespread the problem is.

About 3 billion pounds of used oil is produced annually, and it's worth about two dollars a gallon on the recycling market.
