US increases aid to Jordan

AMMAN, Jordan (AP) -- The U.S. is giving Jordan $359.8 million worth of grants, bringing its total economic aid to the cash-strapped Arab ally to $738 million this year.

The U.S. Embassy in Amman says the grants will fund trade projects, create job opportunities, increase water supplies, support political reform and education.

U.S. Ambassador Stephen Beecroft signed the agreements Wednesday.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said during a visit earlier this month that Washington will also give Amman $275 million extra to boost drinking water in an arid eastern city.

In the past 10 years, Washington has spent more than $4 billion in economic aid to Jordan, a resource-barren country dependent on foreign aid. Washington also gives Jordan around $500 million in annual military aid.
