Science Kits and Product Safety

WASHINGTON (KWWL)-- Hands-on science kits are at the heart of a debate over safety that may put their future in question.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has been writing guidelines on what makes a product a "children's product". When complete, they will spell out which products face rigorous testing under a 2008 law that requires safety checks for lead and other potential dangers.

Those guidelines are expected to be released on Wednesday.

Parents and teachers often make use of science kits to get children excited about science. The companies that make such kits want an exemption from testing for certain items in the kits for things like paper clips and rulers.
