Hawks get ready for Penn State

The Hawks quest for their first conference title since 2004 begins today. Saturday Iowa will welcome in Penn State for a highly anticipated Big Ten opener.

Kirk Ferentz/ Hawkeye head football coach ''I think there's anticipation and excitement for everybody. When you're in a conference, you kind of know each other's moves and personalities a little bit. It's a little different feel. That's for sure."

Adam Robinson/Hawkeye RB ''Everything's amped up. The Big Ten, a lot's at stake We've got a lot of goals and things we want to accomplish. This is our first Big Ten game so we know the level of play is going to step up a little bit.''

With non-conference play in the rearview mirror...Iowa's drive for a Big Ten championship begins with a Penn State team that figures to be more than just a bump in the road

Ricky Stanzi/ Hawkeye quarterback ''They're traditionally good, they're good this year, they've got a good defense and a good offense, very well coached, so we're definitely expecting a tough ball game.''

If the recent past is any indication of what to expect, it's been the big play that's turned this match up in the Hawks direction....

Daniel Murray's heroics helped the Hawks derail Penn State's dreams of a national championship in 2008.

And in 2009, Adrian Clayborn single-handedly denied the Nittany Lions again..

Tyler Sash/Hawkeye safety. "It's nice that we have won those two but it also puts a bigger target on our back. They're going to come in here hungry, just like we're going to go against them on Saturday night hungry as well.''

Ferentz has had plenty of success against the coach he watched growing up. Ferentz is 7-2 as the head coach of the Hawkeyes against Joe Paterno.
