UPDATE: Fatal Benton County crash

VINTON (KWWL) --  Officials say a driver who fled during a a traffic stop has died after losing control, and hitting several trees.

Vinton police say it happened on Highway 150 north of Vinton just before 6 p.m. Tuesday.  That's after they received a complaint of an intoxicated driver in Vinton. Officers located the vehicle, and pulled it over. While talking to the driver, police say the man sped off.

Officials say the man took off from Vinton to Highway 150, running stop signs and traffic lights along the way. Authorities say he lost control, and hit several trees before coming to a stop on its top. Police say he died at the scene.

Police say the man is 50-year-old Scott Kirk of Vinton.  They say he had a long history of alcohol and substance abuse violations, and had been arrested by police for OWI just two days before the fatal crash.

Authorities released him from the Benton County Jail the morning of the crash.

Autopsy results and blood alcohol levels are pending.
