Iowa schools consider merging

WATERLOO (KWWL)--As budgets continue to tighten, Iowa could see a wave of school mergers.

Voters in a dozen shrinking rural districts have agreed to merge into six next year. Others are considering the idea.

State incentive money for mergers expires in 2014. The number of districts will drop to 353 next year. In 1965, the Legislature passed a law requiring all areas of the state to become part of a school district with a high school. At that time the number of school districts were at 458.
