Black Hawk Co. Boys and Girls Clubs mentoring youth

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- It is the topic at the center of discussion: How can schools at the local, state and national level improve learning in the classroom?

A two-day summit kicks off Monday at Rockefeller Plaza and offers an interactive forum for students, teachers and parents. It's all part of NBC's Education Nation.

KWWL is doing their part to take a look at what's being done to help kids in Eastern Iowa.

The Boys and Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County just started a Power Hour Program where students can get help with homework, 3:45 to 4:30 everyday.

The Boys and Girls Club has nearly 600 members and it's easy to be a member.  All someone has to do is walk in the door and talk to a staff member.  It is $10 for an entire school year.

Chuck Rowe, Executive Director of Boys and Girls Clubs of Black Hawk County, says this club is really helpful for students.

"Statistically those who are members of the Boys and Girls Club in Black Hawk County tend to do better in school in their academics, they get in trouble less often in school and they attend school more often," said Rowe.
