State Park Nature Center Re-Opens

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The Mines of Spain state park hosted a grand opening Sunday to mark the end of its expansion and renovation project.

Hundreds of people came out to the E.B. Lyons Interpretive Center in Dubuque's Mines of Spain state park.

The $1.8 million project included a 7,400 square-foot expansion, and all previously-existing exhibits were re-done.

Park ranger Wayne Buchholtz said one of the greatest benefits of the added space will be educational use.

"The new part has a great, big, huge meeting room in it," Buchholtz said. "And then downstairs there's a classroom that's set up like a lab."

Sunday's grand opening marks the end of a five-year project. A group called Friends of the Mines of Spain funded the center's expansion and renovation through grants, donations and state money.

Admission is free.
