Iowa couple pays for entire Waterloo Honor Flight

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Burk and Julie Miehe of Buckingham donated $100,000 to fund an Honor Flight out of Waterloo.

The Miehes own American Pattern & CNC Works in Cedar Falls.

Honor Flight is a program that flies veterans to Washington, D.C. for free to tour war memorials.

Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors Chair, Craig White, was part of the effort to allocate one of the 2011 Honor Flights to Waterloo.

"Our area is rich with World War II history as most Black Hawk County residents are well aware," White said in a written statement. "Of the 300 men and women currently on a waiting list to travel to Washington, D.C., almost one-third are from this county, as well as Bremer and Buchanan counties."

Eastern Iowa Honor Flight Chairman Mike Moran says there will be an important effort between now and Veterans' Day, November 11, to identify all World War II military personnel who want to make the trip.

If you know a WWII veteran who would like to take the trip, or if you want to donate, you can contact Craig White at 319-234-1032 or at 319-833-3078.
