Wes Burnside:Athlete of the Week

LA PORTE CITY(KWWL)-- Wes Burnside is smarter, quicker, and stronger than the back he was just one season ago.

Wes Burnside said, "Last year I'd go east and west a lot more. I gained 20 pounds, and I'm a lot faster, too, so that helps out a lot."

That's saying a lot considering Wes, just a sophomore last year, ran for nearly 1,400 yards, and 15 touchdowns. Despite his youth, that production was no surprise to his head coach Joe Hadachek.

"He can see a block coming on this side, but feel a block coming on the back side and that's just a gift. The key thing is does he use the gift with all the energy he has and all the want to he can produce. He is doing that. He's putting everything into this season," said Coach Hadachek.

As a junior, Wes has only gotten better running for 884 yards in just 4 games, while equaling the 15 touchdowns from last season, 5 of those came in Friday night's comeback win over Central Dewitt. There's no doubt he's a huge difference maker, but you wouldn't know it by talking to him, as he's quick to give most the credit to his teammates.

Burnside said, "I couldn't ask for anything more. It's the only reason I'm able to put up the numbers I put up."

Hadachek said, "He's like that, I mean that's Wes. He's pretty humble and he loves football."

And his love for the game, has helped the junior speedster lead the Knights to a 4 and 0 record, but he says the season won't be measured as a success until all is said and done.

Wes said "I think we have enough talent to do some pretty big things in the playoffs, but we have to do it. We can't just think we can do it."
