Relief coming to laid off Dubuque workers

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL)-–  The United States Department of Labor is awarding a $573,416 grant to assist 183 workers affected by layoffs at Thermo Fisher Scientific (TFS) in Dubuque.

All of the workers have been certified as eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), and this grant will provide access to "wrap-around" and supportive services that are not available through the TAA program.

"Losing a job is never easy, and it is important that we support these workers as they transition into new careers," said Senator Tom Harkin.  "Iowans are some of the hardest working, most productive workers in the country, and this funding will help ensure they have the skills necessary to be competitive in a global economy."

This grant will be awarded to Iowa Workforce Development and will be operated by the East Central Intergovernmental Association.  It will be funded by resources made available for National Emergency Grants. The geographic areas covered by this funding are:  the Iowa counties of Clinton, Dubuque, Jackson, and Linn; the Illinois county of Jo Daviess and the Wisconsin counties of Grant and Lafayette.
