Iowa City Police investigating attempted burglary

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Iowa City Police are investigating an attempted burglary that happened in the middle of the day on Tuesday.

Officers were called to the 900 block of North Gilbert Street at around 11:50 a.m. when the resident reported she heard someone trying to open the front door.

At the same time, a neighbor saw two women at the front door of 908 N. Gilbert.  The witness said the women were trying to get in through a small window by the door.

The neighbor yelled at the women, while at the same time the resident of 908 N. Gilbert opened the door.

The two women ran from the home to a vehicle parked on Gilbert Street.  Police say a man was in the driver's seat and the women got into the vehicle.

Gilbert Street was partially blocked by a garbage truck, so the vehicle backed into the driveway of 908 N. Gilbert.  Two other witnesses attempted to block the vehicle in the driveway with their vehicles, but the suspect vehicle drove through these vehicles, striking them, and sped away northbound on Gilbert St.

All the suspects are described as white and in their fifties.  The car is described as a tan Toyota Camry with Illinois plates, with the first three digits of the license plate possibly being 478. The vehicle has damage along the driver's side and the driver's side taillight is broken out.

Iowa City Area CrimeStoppers is offering a reward of up to $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of this suspect.  Anyone with information about this crime is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 358-TIPS (8477).
