Neighbors react to 68-year-old's murder

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)-- Skip Donohoe and Pat Ogden have lived next door to 68-year old Doris Bevins for 18 years. Now, they can't believe she's gone.

"We were just stunned," said Donohoe in an interview Tuesday, sitting on her front porch. "She was just a real nice little lady."

According to Cedar Rapids police, Bevins was attacked late Sunday night. Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said Bevins was on the phone, when she heard a knock at the door.

"She laid the phone down to answer the door, and the person she was talking to simply heard Ms. Bevins scream," said Hamblin. That person then hung up and dialed 911, but Hamblin says by the time officers arrived, the attack was over. She said officers entered the residence, found Bevins on the floor, and her alleged attacker, 48-year old Jerome Power, in the kitchen. Bevins had apparently been strangled. She later died at Mercy Hospital. Now, Power is charged with 1st Degree Murder.

Donohoe and Ogden said Bevins will be missed, as they talked her on a daily basis, and she often helped take care of their cats. She was also an animal lover, according to Donohoe.

"She loved her bird, Petey, and the animals; she helped Pat look after the animals, because I'm not able to anymore," Donohoe told us.
