Lightning strike sparks Traer house fire

TRAER (KWWL) -- Firefighters were called to a house fire in Traer just before Noon on Tuesday.

"I guess lightning struck the house across the street from us," Ralph Shinn said about an hour after hearing the booming thunder.  He was one of many people who witnessed the house catch fire around noon.  The lightning hit a television antenna that was attached to the home at 810 6th St.

No one was home at the time, but people in the retirement home across the street say they heard the lightning hit the house and then saw the flames.

"Felt like it just shook everywhere. About ten minutes later, we looked across the street and the building was on fire, flames coming out of the chimney. Neighbors and coworkers Briana Cross grabbed a garden hose and got a good share of the fire out and the fire team came and they've been working on it hard," Sherry Lyons said.

No one was injured.

Ralph Shinn says he was a Traer firefighter for a long time and was impressed with the department's quick response.
