IDPH working to reduce hospital infections

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Department of Public Health is working with state hospitals on a plan that could someday reduce two common, but deadly infections.

One is related to catheters, and it's called "CAUTI."  A second is called clostridium difficile, or CDI.

CDI is caused by the healthcare setting and produces diarrhea.  Together, the two infections result in about 20,000 deaths annually in the United States.

Officials want hospitals to start reporting these infections to the National Healthcare Safety Network.

By reporting, officials can then develop a plan of attack for reducing infections.
