A common virus could link to child obesity

SAN DIEGO (KWWL) -- A new study finds a possible link between a common virus and childhood obesity.

Adenovirus Number 36 infects stem cells in the body, turning them into fat.

In their study of more than 100 children, researchers at UC San Diego found 15 percent had Adenovirus 36, and the majority of these kids were obese.

Within the group of obese children, those with an AD 36 infection weighed an average of 35 pounds more than obese kids without the infection.
