UNI with a heartbreaking loss against SFA

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- After a 16-9 season opener against North Dakota State, the 13th ranked Panthers were faced with a new challenge: the tenth ranked Stephen F. Austin Lumberjacks. And it was a game that proved to be quite the contest.

The first half is full of offensive fireworks, the Panthers Tirrell Rennie explodes on the first play from scrimmage. It's a 75 yard touchdown to give the panthers a 6-0 lead.

But the SFA comes back with 15 unanswered points, Jeremy Moses hits Kris Lott with a 13 yard touchdown pass. The Lumberjacks would lead 15-6 before the Panthers make another big play.

Carlos Anderson finds a seam and returns this kickoff 99 yards for a UNI touchdown to trim the deficit to 15-13 early in the second quarter.

With just over three minutes left in the half, Rennie floats a pass to Jerred Herring who makes a move gets a block and uses his track speed to race 83 yards to put the panthers back on top 20-15.

But the Lumberjacks Romonte Hampton scores on a one yard touchdown run with 41 seconds left in the first half to give SFA a 22-20 lead.

Neither team scores in the second half but UNI fumbles away two scoring opportunities in the red zone and the panthers lose a heartbreaker 22-20.

And next week the Panthers visit Iowa State at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
