Girls without biological father close tend to hit puberty early

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Girls living in a home without a biological father tend to hit puberty at an earlier age, according to new research.

The average age at which girls reach puberty has dropped in recent years, partly because of the childhood obesity epidemic, and some believe increased hormones in food, but researchers say that doesn't fully explain the trend.

This study of more than 400 young girls linked early onset of puberty to the absence of fathers, but only for those living in high-income households.

Researchers say more studies need to be done to determine the reasons for these findings.

Early puberty has been associated with a greater risk for breast and other reproductive cancers.
