Cedar Rapids launches new texting and e-mail notification service

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- People who live in Cedar Rapids now have a new way to find out what is going on in the city.

The City of Cedar Rapids has launched a new texting and e-mail notification service for those that want to receive short announcements delivered directly to their mobile phone, PDA, pager or e-mail inbox.

You can choose to receive a text message, e-mail message or both. You also have 29 different message groups to choose from.

Here is a list of city departments using the service:

- The Parks & Recreation Department is sending text messages about program cancellations and changes; special event and new program announcements; golf course, trail and park season information; splash pad and pool openings and closings; and announcement of program registration.

- The Utilities Department is sending notifications about changes in garbage collection schedules, bus route changes and detours, and tips and tricks about recycling and yard waste collection.

- The City Clerk's Office is sending text messages when City Council meetings are scheduled, agendas and packets are posted online and when those documents are amended.

- The Human Resources department will send text messages when new job openings are posted on the City's Web site.

- The Public Works department will send notifications about road closures and bid opportunities.

- The Fire and Police Departments plans to send notifications about emergencies such as evacuations, major fires, relocations and other serious emergency situations.
