Cedar Rapids Metro High School adds volleyball

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Cedar Rapids Metro High School has added a second competitive sport for their students.

A team of 12 girls is now competing against other small schools in the area in volleyball.  The team has a six game schedule this fall.  The sport was introduced last fall as a recreational sport.

"The Metro men's basketball team is very successful, helping young men both off and on the court," explained Erin Payne-Christiansen, volleyball coach. "We hoped to replicate that success in offering an extracurricular athletic event for women."

The program has attracted both students familiar with the sport as well as those new to volleyball and interested in learning new skills.

"I love seeing this team demonstrate in a game something we've been practicing and working on," Payne-Christiansen added. "I also love to see the girls cheer each other on and encourage one another."
