Grinnell area surprised by tornadoes in 1978

POWESHIEK COUNTY (KWWL) -- More than a half dozen people were killed when tornadoes took the Grinnell area by surprise Sept. 16, 1978.

A first tornado swept through a motel and business complex south of Grinnell about 9:10 p.m.  At least five people died and 40 others were hurt by that tornado.

Two others were killed minutes later when another tornado hit a farm south of Laurel.

Power lines and trees were down for miles between the heavily damaged areas.

The National Weather Service office in Des Moines offered no tornado warnings in advance of the storms, but had issued several severe thunderstorms warnings statewide through the evening.
