CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids couple lost their dog and are displaced from their home due to a fire in Cedar Rapids on Wednesday night.

Crews were called to the 900 block of 15th Avenue S.W. just before midnight Wednesday.

Fire officials say Justin and Tasha Lovell found a fire burning in the living room. Justin tried to find the family dog, but could not because of the smoky conditions.

He was taken to a hospital for possible smoke inhalation. No word on his condition.

The dog died, apparently of smoke inhalation.

The home sustained major fire damage. The Red Cross was helping the family Thursday morning.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
