Black Hawks open pre-season with win over Cedar Rapids


WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Waterloo Black Hawks opened the 2010 pre-season schedule with a win over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Tuesday night.

Cedar Rapids scored the first goal of the night at 10:58 of the second period when Teemu Aarnio redirected a fluttering puck during a four-on-three power play.

The Black Hawks tied the game during the final minute of the second period when Mike Montagna got the puck on the open side of the net after Luke Hannon's initial shot trickled free with 47.8 seconds left in the period.

After a scoreless third period, the six-round shootout ended when Aaron Pearce scored the only goal on a low shot that found it's way past the stick of Cedar Rapids goaltender Brady Hjelle.

Black Hawk goaltender C.J. Motte stopped the RoughRiders 30 of 31 including six shootout attempts.

The Black Hawks killed seven of eight RoughRider power plays, including two separate five-on-three situations.

The Black Hawks play their next preseason game on Friday evening in Des Moines against the Buccaneers. They return to Young Arena Saturday to host the Sioux City Musketeers at 7:05 p.m..
