Flag Day Honor Flight planned to depart from Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight Hub has announced it is planning an Honor Flight from the Waterloo Regional Airport on Flag Day -- June 14, 2011.

Black Hawk County Board of Supervisors Chair, Craig White, was part of the effort to allocate one of the 2011 Honor Flights to Waterloo.

"Our area is rich with World War II history as most Black Hawk County residents are well aware," White said in a press statement. "Of the 300 men and women currently on a waiting list to travel to Washington, D.C., almost one-third are from this county, as well as Bremer and Buchanan counties."

The Eastern Iowa Honor Flight hub is still looking for a sponsor to help make the trip possible.
Hy-Vee sponsored two Honor Flights in 2010 but so far there is no benefactor for the Waterloo flight.

In addition to securing a portion of the funding required to make the flight a reality, Eastern Iowa Honor Flight Chairman Mike Moran says there will be an important effort between now and Veterans' Day, November 11, to identify all World War II military personnel who want to make the trip.
