Lindale Mall celebrates 50 years in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Lindale Mall celebrates 50 years of shopping in Cedar Rapids Wednesday.

Mall officials are planning a special celebration in the foodcourt at 5:00 p.m. to thank the community for five decades of support.

Lindale's 50th Anniversary Celebration event will kick off with ribbon cutting ceremony hosted by the Cedar Rapids Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors. Immediately following the ribbon cutting, Lindale Mall will host live entertainment, featuring music from the 1960's, by international recording artist Jamie Aaron Kelley. Refreshments, unique photo opportunities, gifts and prizes will round out the nostalgic celebration.

Lindale Mall timeline:

1956 Sears & Roebuck and the Younkers brothers of Des Moines suggest a bold plan to launch a $10 million dollar open-air shopping center project in northeast Cedar Rapids.

1959 Construction commences in September by Bernard Greenbaum and Associates and endures one of the worst winters in Cedar Rapids' history.

1960 Lindale Plaza opens on September 15th as one of the most luxurious shopping centers in the United States. Lindale Plaza was the largest shopping center in Iowa and boasted 30 of the finest stores, covered walkways and free parking for 5000 cars... "giving families everything they need…in one stop"!

1980 Lindale Plaza underwent and expansion and became an enclosed mall with skylights and additional retailers. Lindale Plaza was renamed Lindale Mall.

1997 Lindale Mall underwent an extensive renovation and expansion adding 56,000 square feet, a 500 seat food court and parking deck.

2010 Lindale Mall Celebrates 50 years as a part of the Cedar Rapids community!

Lindale Mall is a regional, enclosed shopping center featuring nearly 100 stores and restaurants. Lindale Mall is located at 4444 First Avenue NE in Cedar Rapids and has been a part of the community since 1960.
