Convicted extortionist sentenced to federal prison on gun charges

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A man convicted of extortion in Black Hawk County nearly 15 years ago has been sentenced to federal prison on weapons charges.

Dale Schrage, 49, from Mason City, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids.

He pleaded guilty on May 20, 2010, to one count of being a felon in possession of firearms and ammunition.

Schrage was convicted of Extortion in Black Hawk County, on November 30, 1995.

On January 4, 2010, Schrage's girlfriend called Mason City Police saying Schrage had a gun.

After getting a search warrant, Police say they found the loaded .25 handgun the girlfriend had described, other ammunition, and a .22 rifle.

Officers also seized marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Schrage, who must also serve a three-year term of supervised release after the prison term, is being held in the custody of the U.S. Marshal's until he can be taken to federal prison. 

There is no parole in the federal system.
