Ames requests input on future flooding issues

AMES (KWWL) -- A new report recommends that the city of Ames invite Iowa State University, plus Story County and state transportation officials to be part of a study on ways to protect Ames from future flooding.

Large portions of Ames, including more than two dozen buildings on the Iowa State campus, were flooded when a creek and river poured into town last month.

The City Council will review the report on Tuesday.

The report by city staff calls for a flood plan study similar to one that was done after the floods in 1993.

The 1993 report suggested channels be widened and straightened, bridge channels be cleared and reservoirs be built upstream.

However, only private flood-proofing of buildings and modifications to the city's flood plain development standards were implemented due to the cost.
