IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- In a game that looked like it might not even happen because of inclement weather, City High got off to a thunderous start.
The Little Hawks then weathered a West High second half charge to beat their crosstown rival 41-21 after an hour and 40 minute rain delay at Trojan field.
The victory was the Little Hawk's sixth straight over the Trojans. But it didn't come as easy as it originally looked.
City High set the tone early by recovering an onside kick to start the game. A few plays later Ronald Thompson thundered into the end zone from a yard out to put the Little Hawks up 7-0.
And the bruising junior tailback was just getting warmed up.
Thompson would tally the next two scores for City High to put his team up 21-0 in the second quarter.
City High would take a 28-7 lead into the half.
But a sluggish-looking Trojan team came out of the gates strong in the second half.
Charles Rogers threw for a score on the first West High series of the third quarter cutting the deficit to 14. That's as close as West would get, however, as Thompson would add another touchdown in the closing minutes to put City High up 41-21.
